Solar Decathlon China 2018

Solar Decathlon China 2018 (SDC2018) is co-sponsored by the U.S. Department of Energy and China National Energy Administration, organized by China Overseas Development Association and supported by the School Department of the Central Committee of the Communist Youth League. 22 teams consisting of 41 schools from 10 countries and regions will be competing in Dezhou, Shandong Province in 2018.

Aiming for permanent usage, the competition requires teams to build a single- or two-story solar house with a finished area of 120-200m2 and equipped with all necessary household appliances such as TV, refrigerator, cooktop, dishwasher, washing machine, and computer. In addition, each house shall have an electric vehicle and its matched charging device. Teams will compete in the following ten contests.

      Team JIA+ Project

Design Philosophy

For the competition, the team JIA will present its architectural and urban planning project in China: JIA +. The rural exodus and a brutal urban renewal policy brought the destruction of many traditional villages(more than 1 millions in ten years–300/day). We propose to try to find a new way to densify the city sparingly by. building a new house, the "JIA + house", in the courtyard of a renovated traditional house. By building a second house on the same plot, we place the human at the heart of the project and new participative modes are proposed. Domestic tourism in China is in full development, we suggest that the renovated traditional house becomes a guesthouse for tourist and that the JIA + house become the new home of the inhabitants sometimes multigenerational families, or vice versa. The renovation of the old house can be revaluated by the exploitation of the second, which makes financially feasible the implementation of our concept. The bioclimatic design that we propose uses wind, water and sun as privileged energies. Respectful of the environment, our concept promotes the use of local and natural materials (wood, straw, bamboo) while participating in the protection and enhancement of heritage.


International concept

The JIA+ project comes from the international exchanges of the Franco-Chinese team and results from the work carried out by the Team Solar Bretagne in France around the TY + TY concept and especially the re-thinking of this scheme on the Chinese and local context by the relationship between teams and disciplines.


Prefabrication and Fabrication

An eco-responsible house has to be built quickly with a dry and healthy construction process. The team works on a modular solution to optimize the assembly time through simple and accessible construction modes. The wet blocks are bundled with integrated networks to prevent plumbing on site. The rest of the walls is a 2D caisson system consisting of reconstituted beams with small sections of wood. Thus, even untrained students or novices can take over the system and participate in the construction.



90% Eco-materials

Always in a logic of sobriety, we chose biosourced materials, resulting from the biomass, for an architecture respectful of the environment. Carbon traps, they contribute in the need to improve air quality in China. We made the choice of straw board insulation because this material is available in large quantities in Shandong, humidity regulator and inexpensive. Finally, the box beam structure of small sections saves material and resources.


Bioclimatic and energetic strategy: Sobriety and efficiency

The team's driving line is "the best energy is the one you do not consume". By following values of energy sobriety, we first favor the use of the "free" that are the sun, wind and water in a passive design. That's what led us to define the silhouette of our home: a bioclimatic design to make the most of all these natural elements. The open shed to the north side of the roof provides natural indoor ventilation and continuous diffused lighting in the living areas. A summer garden with modular and adjustable architectural surface provides sun protection for facades exposed in summer.
